Frequently Asked Questions About ipMonitor
How do I move a licensed installation to a different server?
1. Stop the ipMonitor Service (ipMonitorSrv) and copy the following folders, including any sub-folders and files, from the old installation to the new location:
- \backup
- \config
- \db ("Legacy" Directory obsoleted in ipMonitor 9.)
- \dbtmp
- \dbstore
- \Historic ("Legacy" Directory obsoleted in ipMonitor 9.)
- \internal\mib_base.bxml
- \logs
- \state
- \wwwroot
Note: The "db" and "Historic" directories are considered "Legacy" directories and will not appear in a new ipMonitor installation. These directories will only be accessible when an upgrade is performed from ipMonitor v8 with “Legacy Reporting” enabled.
2. Delete the following file from the new installation directory: \config\cred\credentials.db
3. Uninstall the original ipMonitor installation. If prompted, follow the instructions provided within the Licensing Helper to Park your license.
4. Install ipMonitor in the new location and ensure you can log in and access the Administration web interface.
5. Start the ipMonitor (ipMonitorSrv) Service.
6. Upon running the ipMonitor service, monitors using credentials will report that they are using an orphaned credential. They need to be reinitialized. Edit all credentials (see Configuration > Credential List) and click Reinitialize Credential. Finally supply the original account and password.
How do I uninstall ipMonitor?
You can uninstall ipMonitor by clicking Add/Remove in the Add/Remove Programs control panel applet.
Warning! Do not manually delete your ipMonitor installation or reformat the ipMonitor host computer hard drive without first properly parking your ipMonitor license. Using improper procedures to uninstall ipMonitor will result in the permanent destruction of your Licensing Key.
1. Open the Control Panel.
2. Click Add or Remove Programs.
3. Locate ipMonitor, then click Change.
4. Click Next as needed, until you see the option to Remove.
5. Click Remove.
6. Follow the instructions provided within the Licensing Helper to Park your license.
7. Click Finish.
How do I update an ipMonitor installation to a newer build / updated release?
1. Log into the SolarWinds support site and click “Downloads & Upgrades”.
2. Locate and download the latest ipMonitor setup program. The setup program will be visible if your SolarWinds account has its ipMonitor 9 license provisioned.
3. Run the ipMonitor setup program on the same computer running your current installation. The setup program will stop all the necessary services and restart them upon completion.
4. On major upgrades, such as version 8 to version 9, the setup program will help you to park existing licenses and retrieve compatible ones for the new version.
How much space does the ipMonitor statistics database use on my server?
Each configured Monitor generates approximately 2 KB of statistical data per day. This means that:
- In one month, a 500 Monitor installation will generate at most 31 000 KB (or 30.2 MB) of statistical data.
- In one year, a 500 Monitor installation will generate up to 365 000 KB (or 0.34 GB) of statistical data.
Note: The above calculations assume that statistics storage is enabled for all Monitors in your ipMonitor installation. The calculations also assume that all Monitors are configured to use default Timing Parameters, and are testing the resource every five minutes. Modifications to the Timing Parameters or to the number of Monitors currently generating statistics can drastically alter the overall size of the database.
The size of the database files is very small, and as such, they will not require much disk space. However, special care must be taken in regards to the drive space consumption when the Report publisher is set to publish Reports under the .\wwwroot\saved folder. The following example shows a Daily Report containing a mix of various Monitors polling every 5 minutes. The Report Publisher is set to refresh every 15 minutes.
- In one month, a 500 Monitor basic Report will generate 73 011 KB (or 71.3 MB) of statistical data.
- In one year, a 500 Monitor installation will generate up to 859 650 KB (or 0.81 GB) of statistical data.
Why won't ipMonitor accept my license key?
We recommend cutting and pasting serial numbers directly from the Support Portal Licensing Wizard, or your e-mail, into ipMonitor's registration interface. This avoids typos and confusion between similar looking characters when entering the License Key manually, such as the letter "O" and the number "0" (zero), and the letter "l" and the number "1" (one).
